Space Boutique – Llandudno
You know how it is when you book somewhere to stay on line? You don’t really know what you are going to get. This week my partner and myself took ourselves off on a quick tour through North Wales for a couple of days (as you would know if you follow my blog). First we stayed in the picturesque Betws y Coed for a night before moving on to one of our favorite locations the seaside town of Llandudo.
We already had the hotel booked on line via Laterooms.com. As we are arriving I am asking my partner what is the place like, how many rooms and so on, to which she kept replying wait and see. This is what you always get when you don’ t go and do the donkey work on the internet yourself, your left in the dark, which most of the time is not a bad thing to be honest.
As we drove down a sleepy suburban street which was no more that two minutes walk from Llandudno town centre we spotted a beautiful white Victorian building which we were pleased to see was the home of our destination Space Boutique. We parked in the private parking space to the rear of the building and made our way to the front door, where we were both greeted by the joint owner of the establishment a very charming and extremely polite Bobby.
After making us both feel totally welcome, relaxed and at home we were taken through to the Bar/Reception area which was laid out Amazingly, it had a charm all of its own, from the fantastic ornate fireplace which shouted style, to the wonderful dark polished wooden floor and furnishing. As we were shown to our rooms, I spotted what appeared to be an in house restaurant (The Jaya), that was when I thought to myself my partner kept that one quiet.
Our room was absolutely amazing, it was immaculate inside and out. It was clearly obvious that some time had be taken over the design and detail, this place hadn’t been thrown together over night, or in some corporate manner, it had heart and soul, it had passion, this had obviously been well thought through.
We were left to our devises until meal time, and even though we knew there were many other guests in the hotel, our room was very quiet and peaceful, so after a long drive we were pleased that we could chill out and relax in such wonderful surroundings.
When we went down to the Jaya Restaurant to eat we soon realised that the heart and soul which had gone into the bedroom, was apparent right through out the whole building, it had a sense of character, you felt at home, and you knew when the time come you would not want to leave.
We both ordered a lamb curry each, some mixed bhaji’s and garlic prawns for starters. We were not disappointed. Sanita, Bobby’s wife was cooking in the kitchen and the skills which had been passed down to her, from her mother, had certainly not gone to waste. I have been to hundreds of restaurants in my life, but as soon as I bit into that bhaji, I knew i was in for something special. I am sure they must eat bhaji’s in heaven, honestly they must do if the taste like this, d-e-licious. The prawns too, were to die for, cooked in vegetables and spices that slowly fused and released their flavours in your mouth. Next came the curry and the rice, beautifully presented by our ever smiling waiter Liam, who catered for our every need.
Where did we go with the curry? Well I had been to heaven with the bhaji’s, so lets try Nirvana, I decided this was simply the best restaurant meal I had ever eaten, that is when I knew I would be back for more….. The rice was so beautiful it could of been ordered and eaten all on its own, the lamb was cooked to perfection, it was as spicy as I had asked it to be, and it was delivered on time. My partner just kept on looking at me and rolling her eyes, she was obviously enjoying it just as much as I was.
After a great nights sleep, in one of the comfiest beds I’ve had pleasure to plonk my head down in, we awoke the next morning, and I can tell you this right now, the only thought that was on my mind was breakfast. We were both greeted by the wonderful smiling face of Polly who is the kind of person you meet and you know you are going to have a great day. She took us through to the restaurant area, and seated us by the bay window which was over looking the Welsh mountains, which themselves were covered in white misty cloud that had just rolled in off the sea, a breathtaking setting.
The breakfast bar was second to none, a mesmerizing variety of the freshest and most colourful fruits and cereals awaited us, and it was all laid out in the most fabulous of rooms. After tucking into our Swiss style breakfast, Polly reappeared to show us a menu, for a cooked breakfast, there was lots on offer, though we went for the full English. Once again expectations were smashed out of the ground, as the quality of the food, along with the timing and the presentation blew us away.
After finishing our food Sanita the kitchen genius, made an appearance along with Polly and we all had a wonderful natter, during which we found out that this splendid Boutique Hotel had been voted one of the Top Ten Secret hotel locations in Britain, I can tell you I wasn’t surprised, at all, well I except for the fact that wasn’t shown on every room in the hotel, but they are not those type of people and this was not that type of hotel, it sells itself.
Bobby who was both knowledgeable and approachable during our short stay was there to see us off when we were leaving, and he made it clear to us that our presence would be welcome again. He also advised checking out some of the other rooms as they are all designed differently, have there own bespoke charm and many with views which are second to none.
I have stayed in hundreds of hotels from Switzerland to Thailand, and I must say that this place in the North West corner of Wales made the biggest impact on me. Lets put it this way I have never felt inclined to write about a hotel before, will I write about another? I doubt that very much in fact I would say no. So readers if you are looking for somewhere to take your partner for a couple of days as a surprise, or you just want to go and sample the fine food for an evening, don’t look any further than the Space Boutique Llandudno,, but ssshhhhhh keep it quiet, it’s a secret location remember?
